Like the Castle, the Basilica Church of Sts. Peter and Alexander is an enduring landmark of the city of Aschaffenburg.


Built at the behest of Otto of Swabia in the 10th century, the central core was designed as a Romanesque basilica with later sections built in the Early Gothic style. It is richly adorned with artworks of outstanding historical importance.


Besides the abbey treasure, a collection of goldsmiths‘ work unique in the Bishopric of Würzburg and liturgical items, artworks include the 10th century Ottonian crucifix and Mathias Grünewald‘s Lamentation of Christ and Maria Schnee altar, while the Romanesque cloister is of unique architectural interest.


To mark the millennium celebrations of the city and the abbey of Aschaffenburg in 1957, Pope Pius XII elevated the abbey church to the status of Minor Basilica.
