Inspired by the excavations in Pompeii, King Ludwig I of Bavaria 1840-1848 had a perfect reconstruction of a Roman villa built by Friedrich von Gärtner.
It is a copy of a house in Pompeii, the house of Castor and Pollux, named after a drawing that hung in the entrance hall. Wall paintings and mosaic floors in the flamboyantly colourful rooms were created in imitation of Roman examples.
Today they provide an excellent framework for the exhibition of original art works from the state antique collections. The Pompejanum is picturesquely situated amid vineyards above the Main, surrounded by a Mediterranean style garden with almond and fig trees.
